for some reason, this snobbishness does not extend to dress. the majority of my clothing consists of clearance rack discards from my mother and sister, bought without the assistance of the fitting room. after a trip to the mall, they will occasionally set a bag in front of me, saying, "it looked nice enough, but..." I own four pairs of shoes: brown moccasins, blue ballet flats, red hi-top converses that I wear when biking, and a black pair of high heels I bought for a wedding. yes, I own a depeche mode jacket, radiohead dress, and authentic iowa football jersey, but the fabric is just a means!

because of the upward movement in my employment, I have been instructed to dress more professionally. I work in an environment which is more on the casual end of business casual, and I never turned any heads when I wore a boyfriend's corduroy pants and button-down shirt. this type of dress, I have been told, is no longer acceptable.

I did get ambitious today, thinking I could find myself a blazer or a nice pair of slacks. I found myself at the 75% off aisle, thinking that eight dollars is an awful lot to pay for just one blouse. maybe it's like haircuts, because I did like that suit I saw in the Banana Republic window.
