i used to marevel at
the frozen lovingkindness concentrate
that
some folks
could just whip right out
when the world became
unbearable
unbelievable
not palatable
they'd take the littlest bit of that frozen concentrate,
add water, and be able to live
for weeks, months on end, 'till it was safe.

now i'm scouring phonebooks
and callin' ol' gals on the phone, trying to fashion
together
a recipe from scraps

so thirsty as my heart sank
welts on my mouth
can't wait to be in the clear
in the black again
something solid in my soul
softer in the belly

drought, warfare, ashes over,
seeming turned on end
doors unslammed
the future bright as forever
