One Family benefit was soooo much fun. amazing mix of people-including older folks who really love the music/probably were regulars during the body & soul days.
gay and straight, boys and girls, goth and funky, belly dancers and dub poets-all coming together having a great time + contributing to a good cause -what more can we ask for from life?
my date for the evening was a bit of a dissapointment-looked a whole lot better than the picture i've seen, but...she talked too damn much about herself and her so-called art/creativity.
granted i haven't seen the actual work, and not all visual artists are articulate outside of their work (which is fine with me), but still, the vibe i got from her/what she said was just way too superficial (and so cliche).
so she's working on this amazing project. highlight of her creative carreer. pro bono cinematography for an independently produced feature film. about the lives of the artists living in (where else) east village.
fine. great. why are you so excited about it and what's so special about this project (besides the fact that no one is getting paid for it-which is not ALL THAT special in indie film making, is it) ?
amazing director who's fairly well know in NY indie scene as art director; feature film; labor of love; creativity overcoming lack of funding...
but what about the PICTURE???
what separates it from all the other dramas romanticizing the bohemian lifestyle of "artists"?
so after sitting through dinner listening politely and trying not to be too obvious about my contempt, getting down on the dance floor and letting music take me away was a double blessing.
she didn't stay around much-which allowed me an entire evening to dance with attractive girls and chat them up during breaks.
one of the girls dancing alone and checking me out turn out to be a visitor from my hometown. after she figured out that i can speak her language, her first question was: are you straight?
well, i said, dramatic pause for an effect, of course not. i'm gay.
to which she replied: me too!
and gave me a wonderful smile
i gave her my number at the end of the evening.
hope she calls
