*excerpt from post I made in SG group First Nations*
I was listening to Tex Hall speak ( for those of you who don't know Tex is the President of NCAI or National congress of American Indians ) and some alarming things came up. 1 in every 3 native women living on/near a reservation will be brutally raped in there lifetime. 9 of the 10 rapes will be done by non native males. This stat is 3x higher then any where else in the country. No other race has those odds against them. As natives we are 3x more likely to live in over crowded houses or below the poverty line. Only 50% of native kids graduate high school. On that same topic in 2005 a proposed plan by George Bush plans to either raise funding for schools or leave there budget alone, except for native schools budget is planned to be flatlined. 90% of natives are schooled threw native schools. Also more natives die every year because of diabetes and other minor too moderate health risks then any other ethnicity. Along the same topic. On average native men and women have a life span of 5 years less then any other race. Also I'm sure you all know that when budget plans get carried out native's are the last to receive money and the first to have money cut. Threw a proposed plan this year alone we are facing the loss of over 253 police officers in native lands. As well as in order to fix our roads and bridges in native homeland's we will receive $500 dollars per mile for repairs and upkeep. Every where else in the country will receive around and upward of $5,000 dollars per mile.
There was much more that I didn't feel the need to print. I feel this spoke volumes of what is still going on to this day. Now I'm not preaching but I am asking what are you doing as a Native to this land to help yourself and your people out????

Have you ever read "The Blood Runs Like a River Through my Dreams" or "The Boy and the Dog are Sleeping"? Both are memoirs by a guy named Nasdijj. His writings deal a lot with the social problems that are plaguing many native populations. Hard to read because it's sad, but he writes so beautifully. I highly recommend both books if you haven't read them already.
