Can you guess who drew this one?

Doesn't look recognizable, does it? In fact, it really just looks like it was done by someone who knew how to draw but didn't have any kind of unique vision. I'd go on to assume that this artist never really went anywhere because he didn't have a "developed style."

Oh, wait. I'm wrong. It's by this guy:

That's right, Frank Miller. What moron gave that loser a chance? He didn't spend any time developing his style before he was paid to draw a comics?! That don't make any fucking sense!

This is fun. Let's try again. Here's another loser:

That's just kind of awful. I mean, there's barely an understanding of human anatomy, realistic costume design, or how to use backgrounds to stage the scene and give the reader a sense of place and geography. I'm sure this artist never worked again.

Oh.

Oh, that's pretty good.

Hey, Terry Dodson learned anatomy. And how to draw believable settings and costumes. Wonder how he managed to do that.

Okay, one more and then I promise I'll stop whining about this.

So, this isn't a bad. The artist obviously knows how to draw. But, again, there's nothing unique about his style. He should go off and not do comics because this early work isn't distinctive enough.

That's Mike Mignola?! He drew Rocket Raccoon?!

And then they let him draw Batman?! But.... but....

Hey, he got to draw his own comic. He became more comfortable with his work, and his style really developed. I guess it's easier to "develop your style" when you're given the chance to draw something that interests you, rather than the same superhero slop we've seen over and over.

I guess there was a time when raw talent counted for something. Maybe these guys weren't distinctive, or consistently good at the start of their careers, but they were given a chance and eventually became top names. It doesn't seem like that happens anymore. Everyone in mainstream comics seems to have two basic styles- realism (photo tracers) or cartoony (anime tracers). Diversity is a bad thing with the big companies I guess. So it really makes you wonder exactly what they mean by "develop your style."

I hope this was as much fun for you as it was for me. Now I gotta go draw something cute.

Your examples made me smile; it's nice to see where people start and where they end up. I guess it's all just a matter of getting the chance to prove yourself.
