This is for the Christmas card I send people every year:
Some fun facts about velociraptors (or the things the book and movie Jurassic Park got wrong):
1. Velociraptors were not man sized. They were about 6 feet long, but only 3 feet high. The raptor in the book and films were based on a more recently discovered species of raptor called the Utahraptor.
2. Their palms would have likely been in a fixed position facing each other, like a person about to clap. This would kind of make the whole door opening thing impossible.
3. Despite Grant digging up a velociraptor fossil in Montana, any remains of the species were found in Mongolia.
4. Velociraptors were feathered. They weren't scary looking lizards, but vicious birds.
Why do I know all of this? 'Cause I'm a nerd. But, I should also say, these scientific facts don't change the fact that the novel of Jurassic Park is a fun read and the movie adaptation was a blast. I love me some dinosaurs!
