Over the weekend, watched a screening copy of No Country For Old Men that someone had given us. Gut reaction - WHAT?! HATE. I remember having a similar feeling about Barton Fink the first time I saw it, though to my mind that had a lot more redeeming features. Especially John Mahoney, Faulkner-and-Fitzgeralding it up. (Sidebar: I met him once; sadly, it was before I'd seen him in that role. I always wished I'd been able to tell him how much I liked it.)

I don't know how to explain it - I felt cheated. Should've read the book first, I suppose...but by the end, I just wondered what the hell was that and why am I supposed to care about any of this, exactly? B. was giving me that I-went-to-film-school-and-you-didn't smirk as I ranted. Meh. I just did not like it, but my dreams the last few nights have been set in it, or someplace similar.
