I just viewed Abjectly's set called Downloaded, and just thought i'd say a word or two about this new fad with these uber-stylish electronics
I just can follow the flock and say I like the headphones ... some brand that came out of nowhere, throws funky design into the mix and suddenly they're a fad with all Alt-styled individuals (which is ironic because ALT often is all about being different than the rest of the country ... hard to do that with a BRANDED product made for your style that you though was so original and unique, ehh?!) ... on top, true Audiophiles will never drop their $200+ solid black Sony's for some pimped out fashion statement with a skull logo on it. imho! : | whatever

Ohh, and while were at it; iPOD? ... you want to tell me that "Music means the WORLD to me" or anything like that, trying to come accross as an audiophile or whatever ... Have you not even realized, that iPooPoo'ed's ( tongue ) run audio at 128kbps??? Do you even know what that MEANS? do you have any idea how misserably low of a bitrate that is? AND your paying $1 PER SONG at that puke pathetic rate?
Yes an iCrap ( whatever ) has AMAZING technology and all that, ... a few millimeter thick thing smaller than a deck of cards, with a high resolution screen (and look beneath the surface ... theres micro lighting technology to light that screen, power systems, amps, filters, all sorts of wonderfull wireing to get that audio powerfull enough to push throuhg tiny wiring into the speaker cable, all the way up to the speakers, to moove Magnets that are sometimes as big as the damn player itself ... it's awe inspiring technology, really ... BUT!...) .... BUT, it's NOTHING anywhere CLOSE to the specs of a device that can play audio in a quality realm close to mirroring the precision equipment used to creat that music.
And you spit on the music even more by using a crappy player (YES the iPod is actually crap, sorry to bust your precious little bubble to shine the light of reality on your regularly shielded eyes), and getting the music from a service that rips you off for a format of the song that has crapped all over the original artwork that was the beautiful music.
I'm all hot on this because i just the other day was talking to this guitar player friend of mine (that used to be signed to RCA when he was young); and he's telling me about the HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS (yes, thats $100,000+) of dollars used in the studios to mix the music, by ... well now ... MIXING ARTISTS ... not just an artist, but a person, specially skilled, with ears that can pick out the finest of details of sound, mould the music into a work of true art in its precision and acoustical brilliance and mirroring of the original instruments .... and how ALL THAT is THROWN AWAY .... completely blown up by the compression methods of mid range MP3's and similar formats.
The only reason why we still enjoy the music is because we've become so used to it, and the enviroments we listen to our music in are less than optimal (on a train, bus, outside, on the street... etc), and we use something that is studied in psychoacoustics (Dictionary.com on psychoacoustics ... how our brains fill in the gaps with perceived sound ... our minds make up what sounds seem to be missing so that it still sounds right.
... but guess what ... it DOESNT sound right ... it's NOT 100% fixed by our heads .... it's never gonna be like the original recorded experience. Especially at such high compression levels as 128kbps!
Why do you think DTS and HD audio formats are taking off now for movies ... some of the new formats run the audio from PCM ... like ... umm ... RAW AUDIO ... un-compressed ... pure ... audio. Your dinky lil player is peanuts compared to what the home movie industry is up to. Yet you still sit back and pay your $1 per song!
I get MY audio for like $0.08 at your same bit rate ... but i dont stop there, I pay like $0.20 or so for 320Kbps and get nearly CD quality audio! eeek

The only reason why the industry allow this ... the sale of utter crap to the populous, when they could VERY easily offer you so much more for your money .... is because of YOU ... all of you ... the populous .... The power of the many MORON overpower the want-to(and-means-to)-give-quality-producs .... you keep buying the iCRAP, and they will continue to sell it to you. puke

Back to the old topic, you can also read up on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychoacoustics ... kinda' interesting.

And I now generally get my music in FLAC audio format. It's a loss-less compression format that takes the ORIGINAL CD (or higher in some cases, Like some of Nine Inch Nails' online released album downloads) quality audio and compress' the data (very well) in a way that when uncompressed, the audio is 100% exactly like the original. Works only in a few programs, like WinAmp (really, the only program you should want, wink ).

Peace! And good listening. biggrin
