Sometimes something happens that completely destroys your illusions about the basic goodness of other people.
Today something happened which made me far more angry and upset than I've been in a long, long time.
We got a phone call at work (at the newspaper) from a lady saying she had found three puppies left at the rubbish bins. I know that people dump animals by the road all the time, in the hope that someone else will find them and take responsibilty for their care. Which in itself disgusts me. A few years ago we found a kitten left at the local rubbish bins, beside the bins in a cardboard box. So that is basically what I was expecting when we went out to this job this afternoon.
I wasn't prepared.
When we arrived at the bins the lady who had found the puppies had them there with her. They were barely two days old, when she found them she thinks they were about six hours old. They fit in the palm of my hand. Their eyes and ears were still closed.
Some horrible fucking heartless bastard put them INSIDE the big council refuse bin. Inside it. Then threw rubbish in on top of them. And left them there to die.
I was expecting to be told that they were left in a box beside the bins for someone to find. This was so much worse than i thought.
The lady only found them because she was throwing rubbish into the bin and heard one of them making squeaking noises, so she pulled out the rubbish on top of them and found them.
I was so angry I was shaking. That has never happened before.
This truly disgusts me. I just cannot comprehend how someone could do that. Owning a pet comes with the responsibility of getting it desexed if you don't want it to have babies, and if it DOES have babies, then find homes for them.
For fucks sake. I feel physically sick just thinking about it.
