Squirrel Avalanche!!! Wooo!
I'm so jazzed by this that I don't even know where to begin describing it!
The house next door to mine is a three story building with a 45 degree incline. The side facing me has a big gable that forms a valley pointing down into the space between the two houses.
Every time we get snow it builds up on the roof over there until it hits a specific point. At that point it all slides off at once in a snow event that could easily maim anyone unfortunate to be standing underneath it. Given that there is naught but a small space between the two buildings, I have long worried that someone would get hurt. Especially since there are a total of 6 children living in the various apartments and they often play out there.
Just underneath the bottom of the valley in the roof angles there is a hole in the building that at any one time an assortment of birds and squirrels may be living in. The squirrels get onto the roof by means of some tree branches off to the rear of their house. Thy have to climb over the top and down into the hole.
So today as I am sitting at my computer I hear the telltale sound of the roof clearing avalanche and I look out to watch it. What made this one different is that there was a squirrel mixed in with the snow. His tail was twirling wildly as he caught extreme air for roughly 36 feet to the ground. I opened the window to see what happened, but he was nowhere to be found. I can't believe he survived that. The snow must have weighed a ton.
Since nobody was hurt, I can say without guilt that that was one of the funniest things I have ever seen. I am guessing that the squirrel set off the avalanche when he was climbing down to get in the hole. Having been blessed already with 3 different varieties of squirrel in my neighborhood, my mind boggles that I could be so fortunate to witness something so bizarre and random.
Thank you
