But I'm not on a phone or tablet. I'm on my laptop. Why couldn't they keep at least a version of the old site for computers, and use this for the phones/laptops? I don't normally check SG when I'm out in public on my phone...

That is exactly what I think ! Everything is make for phones/tablets, even ones which have, by essence, better supplied on computer...
