I had a pretty bone-a-fied talk with Tom Strom at Uptown Tattoos, he had done alot of work one my good buddies James recently so i got to know him a little bit. Seeing some of his stuff I learn he is pretty abstract artist. One peice he had drawn up for a forearm sleave was a Budah and in the design and shadeing he had Alice in Wonderland in the whole piece.
He is a huge Clutch fan like me and i had this idea for a piece that I had been trying to draw up and failing misserable at (i just couldn't get it out of my head right) so I pitched the idea to him, I asked him if he Like Ed Big Daddy Roth and Ratfink, he had kind of a blank stare like i just read his mind "That is all I used to dry when I was a kid" so i hit him with the idea of an Elephant in a 1973 Dodge Swinger in a Ratfink style and use some of the imagery from thier songs, again almost like a dead and suprised look, i was kind of wondering about this, but he set up and apointment.
I came in today expecting a sketch or something but he has a page filled with notes a little something from every album and ep, he started telling me how he sat down and listened to every album read every lyric went through every thing he could, and start running through things that he wanted to incorparateing, Tim Leary with a guy poking out of his head, raceing stripes, robots, pithforks and the ilumanati, i was a little confused at first how that worked into the peice, but that is just the background, so now he is going to draw me up something to show me what the ideas he has brewing in his head for this half sleave. I'm excited to se how this is going to go, I even bumped into a buddie of his at the Rail Jam and got to see a bunch more of his work, nice to know even though I am just getting to know this guy, he is one of the few artist in thight with the circle of skaters and shredders.
When i left you could see the excitment and enthusiasm on his face, he is a hard working dude who will ink for 5 hours straight non-stop easy, well he actully works daily 9am - 9pm, 5 hours is usauly as long as someone can take it
Oh and I had this idea of FOBIARMY for knuckle tattoos, but it came to me that BORN TO LOSE would fit across both sets of knukles thumbs included. Damn this is tough rockin this hard
