Good lord I owe one of my colleagues a pint.
Neil is the awesome Irishman I, until recently, shared an office with. (I miss trading insults and filth across the room.) Since day one of joining this company, he has given me good advice, on everything from who to talk to, through to how to handle the boss. The guy does the work of at least three people - and I'm not even kidding, and yet isn't THAT much better paid than me.
Yesterday he had the misfortune of having to go to a meeting in London with the large fromage, which meant spending a long time with him in the car. This is a car that has had more dings than the bell on reception at the Ritz. On the way back, the boss asked Neil how he thought morale was within the company. Neil doesn't mince words, (I think it's a capital crime in County Wessex,) so told him about what was going on with people, including me - my recent workload and troubles with my car.
I know from past comments that my boss is rather worried about the prospect of me leaving - when you have one guy doing all your company's IT, you kind of want him to stick around.
So pretty much first thing this morning, my boss asks if he can have a talk. What followed next was something of a shock.
He told me he didn't think I was getting paid enough.
That has to be a pretty great moment in anyone's career. I kept my cool and just said 'ok' and left him to carry on. Which he did. He went on to say that even though he was putting a wages freeze on the company, he would sort out a pay increase, which I think he said would take effect as of next month. In addition to that, he offered me a 3k loan - interest free, in order to get another car. I pay that back over 3 years at about 100 a month. Sweet. Keeps me tied to the company for 3 years, or I can pay back any outstanding balance if I leave before it's paid. There were even rumours from Neil that the boss had been talking about a bonus as well.
Yowser.
