I'm starting to get really pissed off with work. The 20 mile commute is taking it's toll on me and my car, which now needs fixing again, but I have no spare money to sort it. I leave my house at 8 and rarely get home before 6.30 and it's draining.
On top of that we had a power cut at the weekend due to being out in the sticks and the building is very exposed to the elements. The backup generator that the previous company installed failed to kick in due to a duff battery, meaning all the servers went down. I spent most of Monday getting everything back online and only got things back to normal yesterday around lunchtime... and then the email server died again, which it tends to do.
I also have to move our finance dept over to our site, which is causing lots of problems due to the fact that their server has to talk to the server that handles the warehousing software for the wholesale side of the business. The upshot is that the sales guys in wholesale are going to see a lot of slowdown when trying to do anything and they already complain that the system is too slow. Great. It's either that or I set it up a different way and the finance guys will see a lot of slowdown. Either way I'm going to have a lot of people complaining to me and the boss doesn't seem to care.
Then I'm having to project manage the wholesale business moving to another site in January, which is just as out in the middle of nowhere as we are. The reason they're moving? Officially it's because the new warehouse is massive & cheap but I don't think it hurts that the director of wholesale happens to live in the village they're moving to. You have to drive through a farm to get to it... Because I'm the only IT guy in the company it will mean if anything goes wrong over there I will have to drive for about an hour to get to the other site. That's after a 50 minute drive to work in the morning, then another hour back to our site, then 50 minutes home again. Really looking forward to those days.
I'm going round to E's tonight, so that will mean food and wine, (I still have a purple tongue from drinking red last night,) and she's really keen for us to start working on a website together for the coffee shop she works at. She wants us to set up a little flash/web design company together, which I'm all for. It would still be working with computers, but doing something creative, which would be awesome. Time to start brushing up on my flash and learning actionscript.
On the upside, I can't wait for the Manchester meet this weekend. I'm really excited and looking forward to meeting lots of faces from SGUK and hopefully making a few new friends. It's all that's keeping me going this week.
