As a follow on from Monday's post I'm formally announcing that I have lost the will to work. Possibly permanently.
Some years ago I tried to get into the games industry as a 3D artist. It's a very difficult industry to get into and I wasn't sucessful, despite trying for a number of years and lots of often humiliating interviews.
I was still armed with a computer science degree though, so I figured I had a fallback career - IT support. I actually like tinkering with computers and trying to fix problems with them, despite how teeth gnashingly frustrating it can be sometimes, (has anyone EVER had a problem resolved by a Windows troubleshooter?) so as far as fallback careers go, it was not too bad.
So, if you asked my what my ideal job would be, it would be 3D artist/animator. Actually, it would be writer/cartoonist/3D artist/animator. (the / denotes 'or'... although it would be a cool job if it were an 'and' too.) But after that, IT manager/support is pretty cool. If I could work somewhere that interested me too, that would be even better. IT is IT wherever you go, but I think I'd find it hard to get enthused about a place that sold carpet tiles or document management solutions for example. An ideal place would be somewhere kind of cool, that maybe sold stuff I was interested in, like maybe skateboards and skater clothing and working with people who were into that kind of stuff as well.
Problem is, that's exactly where I work. I work at the head office of a retail company that sells skateboards and clothing etc. I work with people who are interested in that sort of stuff too and I've even made a couple of friends here, (and a fair few acquaintainces.) but I just don't care about the work the way I think I'm supposed to. At first it was cool and the whole culture of the company really made me feel good, but the novelty has long since worn off. There are upsides and downsides, as with anywhere, but I'm just not 'into it' any more.
The plan was to stay here for 2-3 years in order to have a decent period of time on my CV (I get bored with jobs easily and rarely stay much more than a year anywhere.) and that's still the plan - I'll have been here 2 years in April, which will also be when I have my next pay review.
I guess we'll see what I get offered.
