Oh I'm so bored.
I have stuff to do but I appear to be in a total lack of motivation vortex. What do you mean it permanently follows me around? Ok, I give - I'm a slacker. I don't like working. I find it gets in the way of doing lots of things that I enjoy, such as drinking, sleeping, hanging out, messing about on the internet, (although that said, here I am anyway...) drawing, reading and getting lots of nothing done. Seriously, the amount of doing nothing I have to catch up on... I may never clear the backlog.
I particularly object to having to spend over 100 on fuel every month to get to work, to earn more money for fuel, to get to work... if the words 'ad infinitum' just popped into your head, you're not alone.
You know when you have that, "if I won the lottery..." conversation with people? It always amazes me when people say they'd keep working. I mean like lockjaw inducing droppage of the lower mandible. Sometimes it makes me wonder if I want to keep knowing the person any longer. Well, ok not that bad, but it freaks me out.
I mean, if I won the lottery, my office chair would spin so fast upon my exit that it may drill a hole in the floor. Actually let's be honest, if I found out I'd won at the weekend, there's no way I'd be going in on Monday.
Anyway, some people say, "I'd start my own business!" with a big grin. You can see them thinking how great it would be to work for themselves and call the shots. It's at this point I like to say,
"You'd start your own business? To do what exactly? Business exist for one reason - to earn money. You've just won the lottery, so you have all the money you'll ever need. Don't you think you're being a bit greedy? Maybe you should think about helping others!"
It's cruel but watching the smile come crashing off their face is classic. (Ok, I admit I've never actually done this because I'm too nice to do it, but it sounds like it would be great.)
I guess it just never occurs to these people that there are other things you could do with your life besides work. That's how deeply ingrained it is. There are studies that show that people respond to group pressure way more than they think they do and society is the ultimate peer group. If you don't work, you're a waster. Only people with severely low self esteem can put up with that kind of pressure. The rest of us give in, and hand over copious amounts of our day to people who decide how little we get in recompense for it, me included. Ah... I hear you cry, but if you don't work, you don't earn money, cannot improve your own life or that of others and don't contribute to society! Absolutely true, it's pretty much a flawless system, but consider this - you've won the lottery. You will contribute more than most in taxes and you can improve the lives of others with charitable donations etc. You have the opportunity to improve your life in any way you see fit. Do you still want to keep working?
Me, I'd travel for as long as possible, see everywhere and everything I ever wanted to and do all the things I wanted to do but couldn't previously, either because of lack of money or time. Think of the amount you could see, do and learn!
I reckon that could take the rest of my life.
