My boyfriend studied for one in 2007 and found out that it was actually total shit. You get a minimum salary which you have to use to pay for everything you need: accommodation, food, uniforms, etc. etc. The only glamorous thing about being a field guide (here, I mean) is that you get huge tips from the rich tourists.
But I guess in cases like that, you do it for the love of the job.
