So, now that my 15 minutes of fame are up tongue, time to get back to real life.

While no where as horrific as what has happened in Japan, our area has been hit hard with flooding. We were lucky enough to just skirt it, but we did get 4-6" of water in our basement. Not too much was ruined, and most of what was ruined was stuff that I'd been procrastinating throwing out. Yesterday was spend hosing down the basement to get all the dirty and other ick off the floor. Today I took off work so that I can go down there and spray the floors and walls with bleach, to kill any mold starting to grow. It is a pain in the ass, but considering the damage a mile down river from us, it is nothing.

It really does, I hate coming back here even when it is only for a little while.

One of my least favorite times of year in New England construction is coming up: mud season.

The ground freezes about three feet down, so as the warmer weather begins the snow melts and the ground starts to thaw. Thats when the trouble starts, as the thawing ground and melting ice cannot drain because the deeper frost will not allow any drainage. Whatever is on top of the frost line as it slowly gets deeper and deeper becomes soup. There were some years in New Hampshire when we would have 18 inches of yogurt to wade through, and then of course everything would freeze solid again, locking whatever was sunk in the muck in iron hard earth until warmth returned. We had a basement flood once under the re-freeze conditions (frozen pipe) and I think every one of us on that crew just wanted to walk right back out the door and drive away on first look.

Good job getting the bleach down.
