this is something a friend of a friend wrote and i'd like to share with all to enjoy:

my trip to the black metal show

... well, i did it. i went to my very first black metal show. the evening started out nicely as i climbed up from the subway and arose onto houston ave. in a torrent of rain and lightning. i was feeling the evil already.

i trudged over to cbgb's and was put in a perfectly hateful mood when they charged me fifteen dollars to get in. the crowd was pretty much what i
expected which was discomforting. i ordered a beer and stood drinking
by the bar to get my bearings when i had my first nerve-wracking encounter
of the night. two people coming from different directions try to squeeze
past me at the same time. unfortunately i get the one in corpse-paint and covered in black armor with sharp spikes sticking out closest to me. i try pushing myself back against the bar as far as possible and somehow, in
the process, i wrap my foot around his boot. he nearly falls flat on his face but catches himself and stays upright. my heart sinks deep into my stomach as i expect to be stabbed to death in about three seconds. my norwegian friend has mercy on me though and merely gives me a penetrating hateful look.

the band playing sounded like shit. i chose to stay in the back and sit out the boring death-metal bands in anticipation of the REAL thing. i think the first band i saw was called 'destroyer 666'. they did the
corpse paint and the demon vocals, but i don't know, something was missing. i
wasn't feeling the evil and everybody looked nearly as bored as i was.
occasionally another long-haired metal-head would make an entrance into
the club and this ritual became my favorite part as i sat through the opening bands. when a metal-head enters a club he doesn't merely enter ... he makes an entrance. he will somehow keep his walk at a pace slow enough
for everyone to take him in, yet at the same time take great long strides
that enable his hair to be blown back like a celtic hero. my favorite metalheads wear bullet belts and long spikes. these are the ones that i see and think to myself, "metal for life"!

next up was "agoreaphobia". more boring black/death metal with even
more demonic vocals and low chugga, chugga, chugga sound-the-same songs. i took a seat at a table where i could get a better view and struggled to stay
awake. i wasn't the only one unimpressed though as i noticed some of the more extreme metalers around me feigning complete disinterest. one
particularly murderous looking long-hair actually layed down on the bench and went to sleep! i sympathized with him ... if it's not extreme, it's not worth our time!!!

on to the main event ... the new york premiere of 'cadaver, inc.'. i knew it was go-time when i took a glance toward the stage and noticed the
overwhelming amount of 'hail satan' t-shirts and upside-down cross
necklaces milling around. my satan-worshipping friend sleeping on the
bench must have heard the evil calling him in his sleep as he woke all of a sudden, jumped up, and ran to the front of the stage ... unaware of scaring the absolute shit out of the japanese tourists who'd recently taken seats surrounding him. i made my way to the stage and planted myself smack
dab in the middle of the devil-worshippers and heathens, ready to be
disappointed.

disappointed, i was not. first a little background. 'cadaver, inc.'
is the new band from the original guitarist for 'cadaver', anders "neddo" odden. from what i've gathered, 'cadaver' was a highly respected norwegian black-metal band in the early to late nineties and odden has played
with many of the prominent satanists and murderers. joining him in his newest project is czral on durms, apollyon on vocals, and balvaz on bass.
they all played sans make-up, going for a more informal t-shirt and jeans look. odden says, "Hopefully we're little ahead of our time and can inspire other bands to do more than to dress up like Kiss to make this music interesting." aww, the times are changing. well, things heated up quick as they tore into their first song. i can't give you any titles or lyrics cause i couldn't understand apollyon's demonic shrieks and wails, but i
definitely got his message. he wants to kill everyone and then kill himself ... and he likes the devil too. he looked like a young bard 'faust' eithun, kind of strawberry-blond hair and pale skin. and, yes, much to my pleasure he was wearing one of those bullet belts that i like so much. (oh, on a sidenote: faust guested on the new 'cadaver, inc' record... is he out of jail already? i don't know but he plays on it ... i read in two different places that the jailbird faust from 'emperor' makes a
guest appearance ... so YOU KNOW these guys aren't playing around!).

okay, so i thought that the band would be okay at best but, shit, they really were mighty powerful. apollyon has this amazing stage presence. he cocks his head down and leers out at the audience raising both hands above his head open palmed and ready to attack. most of his violence was directed at himself though. one climactic moment in the set, during my
favorite song and one of the only ones i could catch some words to ... misery ... misery ... missseerrrryyyy, apollyon put his cigarette out on his own arm. it was great, you could tell it must've been painful and it succeeded in pushing him further into the mood. the set was short and
the only other things i noticed was when apollyon spit on an audience member and then threw a lit cigarette at another. the sound they made was
like a great booming sonic assault but there were actually songs underneath.
i knew they were a lot better than the other bands because i could actually tell the songs apart. the audience was pretty small but everyone seemed really impressed by them. there was even a punk girl with a 3 ft mohawk who enthusiastically told her metal-friend, 'oh my god, that was amaaazing.' and, yes, i have to agree. in fact, i would even go see another norwegian black metal show ... and i'm strangely attracted to those pentagram t-shirts. should i buy one?
