I've finally decided exactly what I want my first tattoo to look like, but the trick now is to find an artist who I can have confidence in. The worst thing about being surrounded by some of the best artists online at the few art forums I visit is that it has made me ridiculously picky about all art....and when it comes to art on my body that I'm going to live with for the rest of my life, I just might be a little weary about even the "best" tattoo artists in my area.
So what's a girl to do? Spend a butt-load to fly out to California or Hawaii for tattoos from people who you personally know aren't going to fuck it up, or take a chance and go with someone who I'd consider mediocre at best for something I can afford.

but not completely different either

That sounds like a good excuse to tavel to California or Hawaii. Aside from that, like you said, it's something on your body that you're going to have to live with for the rest of your life. It's worth the money to get it done right.
