unless something earthshattering happens music-wise in the next 6 months, i've a sneaky feeling that for me, 2006 will be all about THE DRIPS!
the April show was pretty gobsmacking. then we all got hold of their rather astonishing album.
6 of us saw them in April (me, tony, carmel and dave, plus a couple of daves mates) - last night we got in excess of 15 people to see them again last night.
the gig was yet again criminally under-attended - about 80 people were at the Barfly, poss about 200 last night?
either their Marketing people suck, or they don't have any marketing people, or the band just don't give a shit. whatever the case, it doesn't stop them from playing the most FULL ON SEARING SCARY PUNK ROCK 'N' FUCKING ROLL i've not seen in a long time.
i'm a bit shit at gig reviews...so heres some random bits from last nights show:
- while minding my own business at the merch table last night, The Drips psycho-spazz singer Matt literally lept on me and gave me a bear hug, having recognised me from the Barfly show.
after the "wrestle" we had a chat - The Bronx are gonna be back again soon (Matt also sings in The Bronx)...
- the band sheepishly sauntering onstage, then literally EXPLODING into album opener "Broken"
- watching Jackie and yeoman doing some amazingly insane "swingdance-twist-moshing" style hybrid.
- Matt ending up in the audience more times than he was onstage - normally with other random audience members attached to him while he screamed his head off.
- Matt dancing like a looney having an epileptic seizure
- Me and yeoman screaming the chorus of 16 16 SIX at each other.
- my mate Dave (some of you have met him - my little scary punk mate) having a 20 second spack-attack during DOWNTOWN BROWN, clearing a 15 foot space around him, then headbutting me!
- Matt ending the set by diving into the drum kit, sending the entire kit into pieces skidding across the stage, then being clouted by Tonys guitar as he threw it into the drums. the band leave the stage and about a minute later, Matt finally appears from the wreckage and saunters off.
- 14 songs in 35 minutes!
- heres a pic - hope this myspace person doesn't mine me nicking it
. look, its JACKIE!
Quite frankly, theres nothing like this band around at the moment. They play the most amazing LA Hardcore/Punk RocknRoll, with the biggest choruses. And they don't even make it look difficult.
Yet again, they left me totally gobsmacked. I'm just glad i got to see them the two times i did (and that a bunch of us got to meet some of the band, who are so normal its ridiculous).
I'm looking forward to them appearing again in a few years time...in the meantime, we got THE BRONX to look forward to in a few months time....
ps - apologies to those that didn't make it. i'm not rubbing it in that you missed it - there was just no way i was keeping this to myself...
