the above statement was left on night and day's first ever set by a user named tofu. i was absolutely stunned by his honesty.

i often find myself scanning the comments for honesty, but i rarely find it.
why do people cheer when sets post of suicidegirls 20 pounds thinner than they had been, where they are clearly looking like victims of auschwitz?
i applaud users such as tofu. i suspect that at times this site does not serve to empower women, but to toss them back into a beauty and acceptance cage, complete with the same old standards plus the new and improved standards: tatoos and piercings. twin fantasies? eating disorder fantasies? how about a supportive community that actually empowers women. not one that berates women by further conditioning them to mold themselves to the standards that other people have created. maybe suicide girls has moved away from its original intentions and gotten too big for its britches. Or maybe it is, and always has been, yet another for-profit venture, poised to exploit attractive young women, reguardless of the implications. sex sells, and apparently, so does the mere image of empowerment and rebellion.

And hey, venting is great. There's really nothing quite like listening to someone rant in a manner with which you totally agree. It's like funnel cake: not enriching in the least, but it sure is great.
