From the BBC TV show 'Dad's Army' (1968-1977), which was about the 'Home Guard', who were a mainstay of the defence of the UK mainland in the last war. These were men who were either too old, or too young to be conscripted. The show was, and is, brilliantly funny, but with the underlying knowledge that these misfits would have fought to the last man, if need had arisen. The character on the shirt is Lance-Corporal Jones, an old soldier of the Boer war, and the First World War. He was a great believer in the use of the bayonet. Which is where the quote comes from.
