There is the graphic novel of 'The Vesuvius Club' by Mark Gatiss (Mycroft Holmes in 'Sherlock'). A slightly kinky Steampunk story, quite brilliant. Then there is 'The Golden Bough', by Sir James Frazer, a study of mythology and religion, utterly fascinating: I've read it about five times, and still enjoy it. Finally, there is my battered copy of 'Tales Of Horror And The Supernatural, by Arthur Machen. Possibly some of the scariest stories ever written. Dreadful things happen to nice people, and usually in broad daylight, often in summer. The tales have an odd, dreamlike quality to them, which is most disturbing.
