Is recognition from higher ups at work, from friends, from total strangers truly important? Though I would love to answer no, that I am fine with my own opinions about myself, along with a few close friends' opinions, that certainly isn't true. I crave positive recognition from other people. It means the world to me when people take time out of their day to tell me that I've done something well, that I've made a difference, that I made them laugh. That, of course, doesn't mean that I do things just to get recognition. It just makes it a bit nicer.

I'm a 7th grade teacher. When I get compliments/notes/e-mails from students and parents and visits from former students, that means more to me than any amount in my paycheck ever could.

I post my art on here and on a separate web page. When someone compliments me on that, I love it.

That being said, I am usually pretty happy with myself. I do, however, crave recognition from other people, but it has to be for something truly meaningful, not just some stupid little action. Too often, in today's society, people seem to want recognition for silly, asinine things that they are supposed to do as human beings.

After reading this, what are your thoughts?

From what I know about you and what you've told me, you sound like an amazing teacher and I can tell you really love what you do. That's important. Sometimes people are just in their own little world and don't see the people around around them.
Im going through the whole "I want to be appreciated, dammit" phase at work. Not so much from the kids, but the bosses.

PS I love the "Fuck sparkly teenage vampires. I like mine old-school!" thing. I just bought the Twilight book because it was $.50. Hoping its better than the movie, because that was brutal to sit through.

I am currently studying to get Masters in Adult Education. It is my dream to teach someday. I want to show people that through learning and education you can make a difference. Not to mention, I consider myself to be a pretty big nerd so I will enjoy being in a school environment without being the student. You are so right though, getting kind words from others saying that that you helped them learn or understand something better when otherwise they couldn't, is such a rewarding thing to experience. I can not wait to have a similar experience. I hope you had a wonderful Easter holiday! biggrin
