By request of one of my favorite friends, I have added spoiler space to this journal entry. What follows below are pics of my very brusied inner thigh area. Groin, if you will. And an amusing story. And some baseball basics.

Carry on.

This is why pulled groins aren't funny.

Okay, they're kind of funny... but anyone that's ever had one will tell you it is painful and sucks. Everywhere you move, anything you do, causes pain in the groin and knee... sometimes hip.

Yes, it's hard to tell through all that sexy leg hair.

So, I played softball Tues. I hurt it most of the way through a 1-17 ass-kicking, making a spectacular shoe-top catch in right center field, because I just don't know how to quit.

Then, because it was only a little sore, I played a second game. Where, for the first time ever, in back-to-back at bats, I hit two in-the-park home runs. That means the ball didn't fly over the fence... it flew past the right fielder (I bat right handed, but am not a pull hitter) and I raced around the bases before he could throw it in.

Twice.

It was okay that night, but the next morning... let's just say Weds was one of the most painful days of my life. Ever.

We won. In two extra innings.

When batters bat, it's called pull hitting when you hit the ball to the same side as you bat. So, if you're a right-handed batter, hitting the ball into left field is pull hitting (remember in baseball, right, center, and left field are named as to the batter; while which side of the plate the batter stands on is in relation to the pitcher. So, a right handed batter is on the right side of the plate, but the closest field to him is left... past the 3rd baseman.)

It's easiest to pull hit. I usually hit up the middle. Sometimes I go opposite field, as they call it. Which is harder to do because you don't have as much power that direction... the bat hasn't traveled as fall.

As you can see by this diagram:

... power is generated by bat speed. And the further the bat travels from your shoulder to the back-side of the swing, the more power is generated. Pulling the ball allows the greatest chance at power (ie Home Runs). The middle is the best place to get base hits, as the 2nd baseman and shortstop are split-up, as are the right and left center fielders. Softball uses four outfielders, instead of the traditional three used in baseball. Basically, two center-fielders.

If someone hits to all parts of the field (such as recently retired, beloved Seattle Mariner star Edgar Martinez) hes called a spray hitter. Sprays the ball anywhere.

Normally I hit up the middle. As I said. But, occasionally, I can grab something on the outside of the plate (the side furthest from me), which is the easiest way to hit to the opposite field. It can catch the fielders off guard, but usually you cant generate a lot of power that direction. The bat hasnt traveled as far.

But I can. Cause Im strong. And the right fielder was not a great player (which is the usually case in softball). The ball got past him (twice) and I was able to run completely around the bases, just beating the throw to home plate.

I cant say for sure that it was worth it... its close. Three home runs, definitely.

Man, my groin hurts.
