One of my best friends could benefit directly from successful stem cell research. While I, too, get annoyed at the Hollywood "poor me" attitude, every time I see her stumbling around in her wheelchair taking minutes to do something it would take me seconds, I could give a fuck how selfish a rich and famous cripple is... as long as they're putting their money into something that eventually could help my friend walk again.
Very, very few people not directly touched by someone in a wheelchair really go out of their way to give a shit, Hollywood or not. G*d bless Christopher Reeve and his *selfishness* for pouring so much money and attention into trying to get better.
