That quote at the end of your comment - fucking brilliant. (Was it Lyotard or someone else?) It's what I've been arguing for bloody ages over here (certainly since 1985) and until really recently everyone seems to think I'm on crack or something. They simply ignore it and retreat to the complexities of Hiedegger, Sartre or Merleau Ponty - all of whom are interesting in their own ways of course. I think there's a real fear about the "loss" of individual sovereignty and freedom and the messiness that ensues from there. Oh, and also perhaps how it suddenly makes oneself rather more responsible for other people. Oops. You see I hear way too often things like: "If he/she wants to kill him/herself, then that's entirely their choice to make and I will not do anything to subvert or alter that choice" or "This teen is choosing to be an offender and he can continue to choose to be that way but he will face consequences." No mention or understanding that these human beings are in situations where they feel powerless, where they feel no hope for ever feeling like they're not just trash. There are always contexts and these aren't just backdrops, they form an integral part of who we are and can choose to be.

Ooops, gone off on a bit of a rant! Sorry 'bout that. I blame society. biggrin

How about a "fuck x" each day? (Btw, I doubt that "Fuck teleology" can be bettered!) Today I choose: "Fuck sympathy."

Snowboarding was damn fine. It snowed the entire time. The room was ghetto as all hell, but we half expected that. We got by with a cooler and a Coleman grill. smile

Danzig was good. Not my favorite, but still good.

Spring break is drawing to a close, I'm sad to say. It feels like it's been a while, though. It's time to go back to...

Something compelling - yeah. I haven't got time to write much right now but I think it's compelling because we are not actually totally alone in the classic existential sense. Part of our being is intrinsically social, interwoven and made up of language and narratives. I don't find it helpful to think that these are "bolt-ons" or additions to some core being.
suicidedoggie:
Snowboarding. Sigh. I really like the idea and I was just about OK on skis but its been such a long time. OH wasn't exactly bristling with mountains. There's Mad River Mountain, which as a name is hilarious. MRM is actually a hill, not a mountain, and is roughly equivalent of the hill from Kensington High Street to Notting Hill tube station, here in London. Granted, one can certainly ski and snowboard down it (I once knew an excentric judge - are there any other kinds? - who skiied to work in Edinburgh when it snowed) but it's hardly an Alpine black run.

So, hope you're having/had a fine time out there in the snow. I can only imagine with some jealousy that you are/did. And I am happy for you. smile

Okay!

LiveJournalupdatingwhat?

I've never really posted much of anything here, but I'm tired of seeing my journal looking so lame.

Here's a bit about me:

I'm an undergraduate at a small university in Virginia persuing a bachelor's degree in Computer Science and (at minimum) a minor in Philosophy. I'm currently a junior.

I also work at the IT Services shop at my university: fixin' the...

I keep a LiveJournal at:

http://www.livejournal.com/users/tefsom/

(Keeping both a LiveJournal and a SuicideGirls Journal syncronized would be bothersome. You're just going to have to go to read my LiveJournal if you're interested. Check out my website too.)
