I have had the full TAMALE experience.
Yesterday my friend and her family and a belated TAMALE making get-together and I learnt this fine art.
Apparently their version is a little healthier than the tradition recipe. Ghee replaces pig fat...I suppose purified butter is slightly kinder on the hips than pig fat....I was rolling little parcels of mashed up potato&maize, chicken, capsicum, rice and olive into banana leaf for many hours on end.
We ended up running out of banana leaf and I converted theleft over mixture into some weird yummy fried up latke thingos. YUM. Everyone loved them. With sweet chilli sauce!!!
I cracked my pubic bone on the top tube of my bike doing a terribly wonky jump about a week ago. I've been feeling terribly sorry for myself drowningmy woes in red wine, brie cheese, tamales and custard&fruits....
I am feeling a but guilty of my fun times as well. Feelign guilty for the plethora of food I've been stuffing myself with, feeling guilty about the cool giant swiss ball I got for Christmas & the cute hello Kitty watch, just feeling guilty for feeling guilty...I can't believe that fucking humungous earthquake in Aceh. I saw in the paper a story of a friends Mum of all people. She lost her whole entire family that lived on an island just off the coast of Sumatra. Their might be a brother that survived because he lived up in the high-country but of course they can't phone him because lines are down. I have not seen thise friend for many years. She 'chases/chased the dragon' and even though shes very lovely and incredibly smart time spent with her was losing its value and she needed to go fight her own wars. Her family has had its fair share of tough times...
Its mindboggling how widespread the damage and destruction is, and how more people are just going to die in this big filthy soup from disease. I feel perverted when I go seek more information because it is fascinating to me. They say Sumatra now lays 30 metres more to the south. I better ring World Vision sometime soon because my sister & I share a sponsor child from Bangadesh.
