I had a strange dream last night. A frightening dream. A kind of survival situation. I think I was on my way home from work. Kind of in anticipation of today. It's in thanksgiving here in the land of poutine and beavers, and I worked because I work for an American company(At $30 an hour, thank you double time and a half holiday pay.)
The buses however were not running. I knew I was getting a ride there from mom but I didn't know how I was getting back. And I think that uncertainty is what inspired this part of the dream.

In the dream I was walking home, I must have been because I think I was on my feet and there's no other reason that I'd have been on that side of the causeway.
Air raid sirens start to go off and I'm hearing instructions echoing from loudspeakers somewhere to find shelter, or head to a designated shelter or something. This is right near the military base, the old fort and lots of military facillities including the military college.
I went to a building which does not exist in reality on the hill to my left. There were two soldiers, armed and instructing us to keep quiet, stay away from the windows, etc. No word on what exactly was happening. I figure that because we're being told to keep quiet it's not an air raid.
I wanted to find a weapon. In the dream the weapons I gathered were my six cell maglight, my machete, and a few of my dinky swords. Which didn't do much to comfort me.
This could my my subconscious telling me I need to upgrade my arsenal.
I remember talking over a radio or on the phone to a few people and feeling good knowing they were safe or on their way to safety. I remember seeing my sister show up at this building, leading a group of merrily singing scout aged children with backpacks and sleeping bags. Which sounds like my sister. If anybody could organize and lead a troop of rowdy ankle-biters, it's me big sis.

At that point I started to fade in and out of sleep. The scariest part of that dream though was that it scared me.
I wouldn't normally be scared by a dream like that, I'd be excited by it. And it put me on edge for this entire day. The first thing I packed for work was one of my three day emergency food bars, first aid supplies and my baton.
If I owned a handgun I probably would have packed it, because I was royally freaked out.

Now something that happened last night that might have contributed to the freaky reality of the dream was that eventually I became aware of sirens. What I was pretty sure were police sirens. I seemed content that they were. But they were there just on the edge of my consciousness for what seemed like most of the night.
I went over to my mom's this morning and she said that she heard them too around 2:00am. Her boyfriend said he heard some around 5 or 6 this morning followed by what he thinks were four gunshots.
I got to work and asked my housemate, he said he heard them for like four hours. his girlfriend said she looked out the window and saw a bunch of cruisers by the strip mall.
I'll know what went down on the news tomorrow.

Having been aware of the sirens I think contributed to the sense of danger and added a bit of reality to it.
But man it was surreal today. I heard thunder start to rumble and it raised the hair on my neck, and not in the good way!

I've spent the evening watching Survivorman (New episode! Yay!) and preparing an expanded survival kit for my backpack. I think I'm going to make a habit of it.

Happy thanksgiving!

Creepy kinda update: So there is a building in the general area of the one in my dream. A house, which seemed to make less sense when I woke up from the dream. But there it is. The subject of fallout shelters keeps coming up. Like something in the newspaper about 'This day in 1964, fallout shelter passes were mailed out to Kingston residents.' Which was explained to me by someone who was a child at the time that it was essentially ushering people into their own graves, seeing as there was no infrastructure to bury them were they on the surface, they'd go into these shelters, die after a week from radiation, then the government would have it on record that all these people were accounted for and buried. Would like to the story, but my net's being a bitch.
My two new goals are to A: obtain one of these shelter cards and B: Find one of the supposed shelters which was to house some of the 61,XXX people.
