okay - it's very, very possible that i'm misunderstanding what happened, so feel free to slap me if you think i'm being retarded but, in my experience, the borax always mingles with the silver a little, and it floats to the top and kinda swirls around. then when you cast, all the impurities are stuck in the borax, which floats and therefore just forms the top of the button, leaving the casting itself pure.
the melting dish usually needs to be hot (i heat it to 900F), or else it takes the silver fucking forever to melt.

ps: for that matter, the mold itself should also be hot, else the metal will harden as soon as it touches the plaster and it won't cast at all.
