Immortalism --- the last religion there will ever be.
Imagine the world a thousand years from now. Medical technology will be at a point where people can be 200-300 years old, but live in 20 year old bodies. What meaning do current religions have in these people's lives? What meaning do the current religions have in OUR lives now? How relevant are the ten commandments...

My father passed away in late October. I had to pay for the whole funeral and everything because he left my mom with a lot of gambling debt. My mom is dealing with it okay.
But now, the center of mass of the family is closer to me, so she's coming this way for Christmas. I guess I better clean up around here!
I thought...

Wow, many people are interested in what I do at EA. Short story: I program graphics and tools.
Anyway, I'm back into dating. So, I've got way more girls that I'm seeing than I can handle. That's why I've got less time for journals.
I'm sure they'll all dump me soon, so I'll have more time to write later.

I've always thought it'd be cool working for a game company. But then I recently read this:
EA: The Human Story
Yikes! Truth to it?

Going through crunch at EA. My grandma is coming up this weekend, but I'm supposed to work this weekend... Yes, we're expected to work on Labor Day, too!

I got a little snippet published in McSweeney's.
If you've read my previous journals, which you probably haven't, you'll be able to figure out which one is mine.
In any case, they're all good, so I encourage you to read them all.

HAHA!
That's funny....
I can't think in the mornings. I really screwed up a programming question at one of my interviews. I knew the answer about 10 minutes later, after they had shown me the door.
I have lots of interviews and am busy taking many programmer tests. Kind of annoying because there are so many and they each take up quite a lot of time.
I came in 1st or 2nd (in the money) in 7 out of the last 10 poker tournaments ($5 buy-in) on party-poker.
Looks like I'm starting to get better at this game.

Alright... things are looking more hopeful for the company, so I'm going to put in a journal entry that's not such a downer.
Here's a random poem I wrote when I had time to write such things:
Danger Girl
Dangergirl has super powers,
Super powers over me.
Dangergirl walks barefoot in the rain.
"Oh!" she shouts. "You nearly killed him!"
She crouches down as I...

Hey! My b-day isn't actually until the 9th, but thanks! I don't really have too much of a plan yet. I do get the day off of work, though, which is always great!

so far so good.... It's been about 3 weeks. I'm still using the patch. I'm gonna step down my dosage on Monday, and hopefully in another week or two I'll be fine without it. We'll see.
Couldn't sleep today. Feeling depressed about the prospects of our company.
Starting your own company is too damn hard. I think maybe I sacrificed too much for this.
You people with boring low stress jobs don't know how good you've got it.

I could never start my own company. Jesus, the stress would kill me. I've seen too many people bite of more than they can chew, and it's rough.
I know what you're saying about the video game industry becoming like hollywood. It's scary. Especially for someone like me. I seriously want to have a career doing game programming, but I'm still in the early stages of learing. I have a long ways to go, and i'm scared of what the industry will look like once I'm ready to look for a job.
hmm.. best of luck to you, though.

If that's what you want to do, then go for it. I've always enjoyed it, and the industry has been pretty good to me.
One danger with game programming is that it can burn you out quickly. The industry is full of young people, and there aren't many old game programmers out there. They either move up to management or else get obsoleted by younger programmers.
Anyway, don't let any of that discourage you because I wouldn't have traded all of those horrible experiences in the industry for other horrible experiences in a completely uninteresting industry.
The tough part of game programming, for me since I'm in graphics, is keeping up with all of the constant changes in hardware.

Went up to Sausalito for a meeting this Friday. Wow, is it gorgeous up there. The Golden Gate Bridge looks magnificent in the fog. The curved lines of the suspension bridge are quite a marvel of beauty and engineering.
I'm back in boring old Mountain View now. One can only have so much beauty in one day.

Firefly is coming out as a movie!
I'll have to buy about 10 tickets so they can bring back the TV show.
I'm still upset that Fox canceled the show. To all you hot SG girls out there... if you ever meet a Fox exec who canceled Firefly, don't sleep with him (or her)!
Suddenly, I feel the weight of my own ineffectualness.
