I have been asked quite a few times about why I left Facebook. I left for several reasons, one was personal, another was a conscious decision to step away from the electronic world.

I was finding myself on it far, far, far to much. I could not do anything without checking FB first, it was beginning to control my entire social life and I've seen it with alot of other people too. There isn't a day that goes by where I don't hear at least once a day, "Leave me a message on FB" or "I made all the plans and set up an event on FB". It has got to the point where most people place their entire lives on FB and do all their socializing on FB that they find it hard to communicate with people outside of FB.

My own sister is an example of this. She has scheduled all her important dates and meetings for her wedding on FB. Not thinking, that for the majority of older people in her life (parents, grandparents, etc.), they don't have FB and would not have found out about, if it wasn't for the fact that she ended up calling them upset, asking why they never acknowledged her "events" on FB!

Another example would be a friend of mines girlfriend, who is one of these people that noitifies you every 5 minutes on their current status. As well as using FB as a way to continue her favourite passtime, Trash-talking and Gossip.

Third, I got tired of the disconnection that FB brings. No one talks to anyone anymore (I realize the irony of blogging about this on SG). I like to pick up the phone and call friends when I want to socialize and only then to set up a time so we can meet.

Lastly, FB has a horrible track record for security and lack of privacy. For more on that, read this; Facebook Privacy Failure

I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you want to talk, give me a ring-a-ding-ding and if you don't have it ask. tongue

I don't mind Facebook. But I have a rule - if we add each other as friends, then I actually want to be friends. I know a lot of people have hundreds of friends. I know one person who has over 1000 friends on Facebook. I have no idea how one person can have so many friends, and I can't understand how they could ever keep up with the feed, even if they were on 24/7.

I think I have about 30 friends, and I try to keep in touch with all of them. Otherwise, what's the point? I may have to raise my estimate of friends, since after the gala, I've added a few more.

As for arranging events on Facebook, I don't really understand it. I mean, I guess if it's some huge public event, it makes sense, but making your wedding plans on Facebook.... I agree, it doesn't make sense.
