satellite
the earth looks to be frozen against a cylindrical backdrop
with antennas creating shadows against the polished outer shell
and a million invisible messages stream from this new age junk
down through the atmosphere to the hidden surface below

a bunch of circuit boards lay across metal board floor
strewn like dice in an alley inhabited by footprints
and wires poke out like bones impress on skin
little bits of copper and other parts of the periodic table
lay disjointed and not in their proper groups or periods

the stars seem disinterested peeking through layered glass
rubbing their eyes as they look through make shift corrective lenses
space is silent having seen this movie before

and yet he is slouched against a door that barely opens
head down against his chest with plastic cards falling out of fingers
body frozen against the wall and condensation in his helmet

a screen flashing denied just above his head
because he knows he'll never get his message right
