neuromancer author bill gibson on wsb:

Burroughs was then as radical a literary man as the world had to offer, and in my opinion, he still holds the title. Nothing, in all my experience of literature since, has ever been quite as remarkable for me, and nothing has ever had as strong an effect on my sense of the sheer possibilities of writing.

Later, attempting...

i fucked up.

my first day on the site here, i made an off-color remark on isadora's photoset because a couple of photos in there reminded me of disturbing imagery i'd seen elsewhere before. rather than using my forethought to determine that the remark might be taken personally, i hit submit thinking nothing of it. now isadora hates my guts and the sg staff isn't...

I have no idea what your talking about ... but when I did click on her photoset ... to see what your post was about ; something in my head went "astray" and I closed the window... I haven't read your posts but i think were on the same page.
cupidvalentino:

hah! i live in israel, i work in israeli social justice movements, and i just got banned from the pro-israel group because i proved what a relentless douche albion is! unfuckinreal!

welp, i've just requested permission to launch a "middle east peace" group. hopefully i'll get the go-ahead and facilitate some enlightening conversations on the israeli-palestinian conflict that don't involve anti-arab hatespeech! jeebus!

trying to defend yourself by attempting to prove your insult doesn't really work. showing me photos of starved people next to my own photo not only insults my intelligence by presupposing that i've never seen holocaust documentation, but it also is just driving your original insult deeper.

again, you don't have to like my set. i don't give a fuck. you have your reasons. fine. but you don't need to try to make me feel like shit in the process. didn't your mother ever tell you if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all? it's called basic good manners and human decency. work on yourself before you try to save the world.

oh, and - am i supposed to feel sorry for you 'cos you didn't get your group over this? poor you.
mobius1ski:
i have no interest in making you feel like shit. it was really just an aesthetic observation. your pictures made me uncomfortable. i said so and demonstrated why. it was not intended to be an insult.

in retrospect i understand why having that comparison drawn would upset you, and i do apologize, really, truly, sincerely. i'm not aiming to insult your intelligence and i'm not presupposing anything. but please consider that i live in a country where children don't raise their hands in school because it looks too much like a heil hitler salute. the parliament is currently contemplating a ban on the use of the word nazi by its representatives. i come from a culture that's very sensitive to holocaust imagery. and it's simply not in our nature to be silent when we are confronted by it.

Our critique began as all critiques begin. With doubt. Doubt became our narrative. Ours was a quest for a new story, our own. And we grasped toward this new history driven by the suspicion that ordinary language couldn't tell it. Our past appeared frozen in the distance and our every gesture and accent signified the negation of the old world and the reach for a...

We watched excerpts of that movie in my digital art class, I've always wanted to see the entire thing.

By the way, you should respond to people's comments in their own journals, they probably won't see them otherwise smile
