Concert Review: Primus (those guys suck!)

Ah, so refreshing to be inspired to pick up a bass guitar again! I need to go buy one first. Anyone have a good used bass and amp for sale?

Well, I couldn't find anyone to take my second ticket. I was going to go with a friend who I called up last Thursday, but she called this morning and told me she couldn't make it. I spent all day trying to find someone who could join me, but no such luck. I finally decided to drive down and sell my ticket to some sap at the door.

I got mostly lucky with that endeavor. I sold the extra ticket for half of what I paid for it. It was worth the loss though.

A woman in the parking lot had a Primus cake! They printed the Frizzle Fry cover on the top frosting. Very neat! She was handing the cake out to everyone who would stop by. It wasn't too bad either! Chocolate with bananas in the middle.... and I normally don't like bananas other than fresh, fried, or in smoothies, but this was really well done

I got there with my pit pass, happy as a clam, and saw that the pit was practically empty... and very small! I didn't have to bustle and fight to get to the front because I was already there!! I was in spitting distance of Les and Larry, and had no worries of moving. I have been to many shows, but never in my life have I had the privelege of being right up front for the duration at a big show! (well, except for 311)

I've been listening to Primus since high school. They don't come out with new stuff that often, and I think it has been some time since they've come out with something new (Antipop was released in 1999, Suck on this Live was 2002 - with nothing new). I guess that Les has been doing much of his own stuff lately (Oysterhead, Purple Onion, and who could forget Sausage!) and I hear rumor of a new album soon.

So, of course, most of what they played were classics from Pork Soda, Seas of Cheese, Frizzle Fry, and others I can't recall where they were classified. The brilliance of the performance came out in Les's ass-reaming solos that extended every song another two to five minutes than the originally recorded time.

The highlights that will eternally burn in my mind are the covers... They covered Frank Zappa!! I didn't catch on right away when he started singing "Dumb All Over", but I couldn't contain myself when I finally caught on. Nobody knew what the fuck he was doing. I was amazed both by the brilliant respectful honor for Frank and the shock of the crowd for not knowing what Les was playing. They ended their first set covering Rush's YYZ (which happens to have the same cymbal tap opening as "To Defy the Laws of Tradition") and more people seemed to know Rush. I laughed when someone commented on "just how cool was the new stuff he was playing." I had to stop and give some lectures.

Herb carried into the closing with a ten minute percussion solo that blew everyone's minds. Sometimes he would hit things that would trigger syntho sounds, kinda like a keyboard would. He had a strange drumset... most of the barrels were longer, but smaller in diameter than most other sets. There were a couple of .. uh.. drums on the side that were like long tubes with the skins at the top that made odd noises.

Les joined him with this strange instrument that was simply a tall bar with a single bass string and a lever at the top. He played it with a drumstick and carried it around by the lever. The lever was a tension bar that worked the pitch of the string. It was weird, but fucking phenomenal.

Security was being really weird and tight down there too. They would walk right past people being violent or doing drugs to bust fence hoppers. If you had no wristband, you were dragged out and back to your seat. After the show, one came up to me and told me he decided not to press charges against me for picking him up and lifting him by his legs. I did no such thing!! I later found the guy who did lift him up, because he was bragging about it to his buddies as we were leaving.

I also twisted my ankle in the pit. Damn, I feel old sometimes. I just want to bitch and gripe about the crappiness.

But, then again, I did go and jump around and encounter the mosh. I'm pretty badass!!

\m/ >___< \m/

On that note, I suggest that you do go get to a concert on your own on occasion. It's fun to be your own best friend some nights.
