I'm told that hockey gloves offer excellent protection for the hands, so I will be looking into a pair to see how well they perform against wasters and shinai. Sure, they're a bit bulky, but so are maille-lined leather gloves (which are beyond my budget). The big variable, I think, will be how they effect one's grip on the sword.

Today we learned that there have been two recent sport fencing accidents that involved the failure of the mask. The most recent was in the past month--a foil penetrated the mesh and stabbed someone between the eyes. The recipient of this survived, but won't be fencing anymore.
