Killing off Wash made the death more shocking. Zoe is a soldier, one of the only true frighters of the crew; so if she goes down in battle it would have been more expected. Wash's death comes out of nowhere. Hence the brilliance of Joss Whedon. When he kills characters he really goes for the heart.
