I have come to the conclusion that the Boston music scene is vastly underrated. I was very into the local music scene when I was in high school and sadly (though understandably) lost touch with it when I moved to New York City for college. Now that I have been back here for two years, I am delighted to have discovered that a new generation of local greatness has cropped up. Specifically, bands like The Tint, The Unseen, Runner and the Thermodynamics, The Pills, The Dresden Dolls, and Missing Joe make the local scene thrive. But damn, do I miss those mid-90s loves of mine that have pretty much disappeared without ever getting the due that they deserve. Bands like The Sheila Divine, Letters to Cleo, Buffalo Tom, Gigolo Aunts, Morphine, and Sebadoh defined my musical tastes and still make up the core of my collection. I was lucky enough to see almost all of them live at some point or another, except for The Sheila Divine, which upsets me greatly. They broke up a mere six months ago after shows played literally down the street from my apartment that somehow managed to elude my knowledge (I suppose it was that whole "beginning law school" thing that got in the way). I want to make a compilation of great Boston bands, old and new, that should take over the world. Hmm. Perhaps I should. Anyone want a CD? wink

The lesson of the story is this: If you're looking for some new music, take a look at some Boston bands. If that's not possible, get the hell out and support your local music scene.
