Why I'm here
Taken from my University Statement of Intent -
'For my final major project I will be working along the theme of Alternative Beauty; observing what beauty is in the 21st Century, including the ideas of subculture and fashion. I will be looking at other artists who use beauty as a theme and documenting my research in small sketchbooks. The size of the sketchbooks is a very important part of the project, I aim to carry the books with me everyday so I can document everything around me and capture moments of inspiration. I will document my ideas through photographs, quotes and ideas that come to me. My research will also start while I am in Italy, and will feature the differences through illustrations of beauty in Italy compared to the UK.
Day to day I will be using traditional materials such as pencil, watercolour, paint and pastel to capture ideas, however I will also be using digital media (Laptop and Wacom tablet) to further develop my work.
My finished pieces will be illustrations that are aimed at commercial application, such as prints, packaging and cover design. Due to the fact that my work will develop and evolve, my concepts may change and are very open to new ideas. I also hope to show through my research in what ways the illustrations can be applied to products. My aim is that my illustrations become more than mere drawings, that they become part of an object and make that object what it is.
Daily as part of my work I will be evaluating my position and where I stand, this will also help in my time keeping. I will also be discussing my work with my tutors and peers often, as well as discussing thoughts and ideas with other art students over the internet. At the end of this project I will conclude with a written evaluation discussing my thoughts on the whole project.'
