So, I was raised Christian. I know the stories, the prayers, and probably even some of the songs. I used to go to church three times a week. Life happened.
Now I don't know what to believe. I'm watching Passion of the Christ as I type this. That Jesus guy was one ballsy dude. Like I said, I don't know what I believe. I believe in a God, of sorts. I believe in good and evil. I just don't know if I believe in heaven or hell.
I believe in the power of prayer. I actually read a book (mandated by work) on the power of positive thinking. That kinda shot down my idea of prayer concerning "God."
Why on earth is religion such a big deal? It was Family Guy maybe, or Robot Chicken or something on Adult Swim that really said it the best. It was an animation of the world, kind of like a flat map, only animated. All of the countries were in peace and harmony until a little baby named Jesus was born and then boom. The animated countries go to war.
Don't all religions believe in the same thing? Don't they all believe if you do good and are a just person who is a kind and giving and forgiving soul you will end up in an eternity of paradise? Aren't they all thankful for something who created all of existance? One religion is thankful to a super individual where others have super teams of awesomeness.
Watching this movie, however, is making me think more deep into my Christian roots. I've caught myself praying lately. I say a prayer every time I get in my car. "May He bless us with His light and surround us with His love as we venture into His world. May He keep us safe. Amen." And then I kiss the baby and tell him I love him.
I hope I don't start a debate on here, and I don't mean to anger anyone. I respect all religions one in the same. (For the most part. I don't know much about Satanism, but who's to say they don't look at Satan like Christians and the like look at Jesus?)
I'd like to know how you feel.

Interesting. Some thoughts:

1. I don't think that all religions are essentially the same because many religions explicitly state that they are not in fact the same.
2. What I believe isn't what ultimately determines anything for anyone else - even as a Christian, if I believe that Christ is the only "path" so to speak, that does not make Me God, it does not give Me any sort of control over their soul, and it does not invalidate their thoughts. I must do what I feel compelled to do, and I must leave the rest up to the individual, I think.
3. Historically, yes, wars have been fought for religious reasons. Some still are fought for that purpose ...but few religions in their modern interpretation highly value the slaughter of opponents.
4. I firmly believe that what you, Miss May, as a human, hold dear does matter. For some, religion is a structured set of beliefs. For others, religion might be a philosophy. And for others still, the rejection of religion may become their functional religion. How we relate to the world around us becomes, of necessity, our "faith" of sorts. It's how we organize the world. It's not all the same - examples of this abound. But it does all matter cosmically, I think.

I like this blog. I hope there's debate. Maybe not anger, but I want a debate - discussing ideas is a vital component of being actively engaged in life.

Cheers, Miss May smile
