WOW. OMG wow. I am royally ethically pissed off right now. I just caught the tail end of Taboo: Narcotics on NatGeo. Are you fucking kidding me?! There is a free clinic in Vancouver called InSight which provides heroin (and other, but mostly heroin) addicts 'a safe and sterlie place to use.' They provide them with everything but the drugs; the needles, the tournaquets (sp), the lighters, the basins, etc.. They even have a nurse stand by each person as they shoot up and instruct them which vein is the best to use. They believe if they are getting the addicts off of the street they are helping them. They are by no means helping them. They are enabling their addiction and allowing them to stay sick.
The other disgusting part is there is another clinic upstairs called OnSight which is a rehab clinic. They said there is comparitively 1% of people there to the people downstairs, and that NO ONE comes from InSight to OnSight. This is the only clinic like this in North America. I wonder why.
I understand they are providing addicts with a safe place to get high, preventing aids and other diseases from dirty needles, etc. They said they'd rather have someone go down in the clinic than in the streets because in the streets they would just die. Well, what happens why they go down, and down and down again in the clinic? What happens when the years of allowed drug use kills them anyway? Why enable them to do this? I absolutely hate to be like this, but if they don't want to stop or won't after you've gone out of your way to help, why let them live? They are trying to kill themselves anyway.
Dustin brought up a point on methadone clinics being the same which reminded me of an article in the Dayton Daily News the other day. The Montgomery Co. has the highest O.D. rate in all of Ohio. A kid I went to highschool with, Nathan Ford, had an entire page dedicated to his story on methadone. He isn't dead, he is in recovery. The article said methadone is the second in O.D. drugs next to heroin. This is because instead of weaning people off of the meth they are giving them more and more. Nate said he had to stop going to the clinic because it was making him worse. I went to the W.I.P. when I got my DUI and a guy in my class said the same thing.
It just breaks my heart to know all of this. It makes me so glad to know I was never to the point of addiction like this. Yeah, I would spend my LAST dime to buy pills, but I wouldn't go sell cans to get money. I never have shot anything in my veins and I haven't put anything up my nose in, um.. well.. I think it'll be 5 years this weekend. WOW. That's awesome!
My mom told me, almost in tears the other night, that she's watched me grow up in the last six months. Well, I know I was out of her house for a year, again, and I did a lot of growing up then, but I have to agree. It's not just baby. It was coming back home and realizing that while it's great to be home with mom, I really want to be out on my own! I have never ever lived alone, and I won't be here come September. I need to experience it now. I spent the whole day at the apartment minus moving furniture, lunch, and returning/getting new things at the store. Well, I don't have cable so I watched two DVD's while I did stuff.. It was cool because I just moved my laptop from room to room. I won't have cable or anything until at least next week! I'm going to call and beg and pleade to have it turned on this week! *Mommy wow. . I'm a big kid now!*
I need to shower. Bad.

I smell.. puke
