In attempts to push through the last hour and a half at work I write this. I was a volunteer firefighter - EMT for the Commonwealth of Virginia. I stumbled upon it because I was told it was not something I could accomplish. Perhaps EMT work, but never go through fire academy. I did. I was on the truck crew and engine. One of two females at the time. As an EMT I lent my services between two counties and I loved it. There are many memories I will always carry with me, my battle scars I suppose. I remember seeing men I admire leave their gear on the truck and walk away never to return again because they just couldn't handle that call. I'll always carry with me "hell week" which concluded with my crew and I sitting up after our watch just staring at each other trying to find solace, something that we wouldn't find at home that night.
Now, I am a Soldier for the Commonwealth of Virginia. It sounds a lot better than the reality of it. I am proud of my service to this place, I train for days that I hope never come but in reality it could. I must be proficient in my MOS because when it really counts I will be responsible for someone else's life. I carry with me a lot of my lessons from the firefighter days, the values stay the same. I wear a uniform (for as much as I want to bitch about it sometimes) has seen more combat, and more loss of life than any others to date. That heritage I am proud of. I serve my community the best way that I can. The only ones that could ever say any to me are the ones that have signed a contract binding themselves to fight for my freedom, and even in that we took the same oath, to some extent we do a lot of the same things just on a much different scale.
