Work is very interesting... Lots of drama! I'm torn in applying for a position that I'm certain I won't get, but may squeeze by the screening process and at least get an interview. The reason I'm torn, is it's the department where I'd love to work, and if I pass the screening process for the position, they at least know I'm interested in coming to the department and hopefully keep me in mind for a lower grade position. The position is a Planner III. On paper, I may qualify, but barely. I'd be safer and more comfortable coming in as a Planner I or II. The thing that makes me not want to apply is that there's a possibility that the department would think I was more of a joke for applying for such a high position... and more or less laugh at me if they see my application come through again. The position starts at $10K more a year than I'm at right now, so it's awful tempting to at least try....

Otherwise, you'll always look bad and regret not having tried it. Besides, how could they not like you?
