Three Trips to Emergency

Trip 1: Rats!

My first trip to the emergency department happened when I was twelve years old. I was in Grade 7 science class that was the year that science class consisted of learning through paper plane contests and building bridges with straws and glue to see which could hold the most boxes of chalk. It was also the year of my science experiment to see if turtles could learn to walk a maze (conclusion: no).

But I digress. We had rats in that classroom. Two rats in a habitat made out of a large glass aquarium. At the end of class one day we had some extra time and the teacher let us play with the rats.

Twenty kids all huddled around the tank all reaching in to pet and play with the rats. I dont know if we didnt know they had babies or didnt care but the rats must have been feeling especially protective and harassed that day.

When I started to lower my hand into the tank the female rat jumped. She sunk her sharp front teeth into the fleshy part of my hand at the base of my thumb. I jerked my hand back causing the wound to open more. I dont remember freaking out but there was probably some freaking out. And Im sure it was not the best day for my science teacher either.

With a bleeding wound about 3 centimeters long I sat in the principals office while they called my mom. Thats a call Im sure no parent wants: you need to take your daughter to the hospital she was bitten by a rat.

The hospital was one big blur of admin and nurses and one doctor all having the same reaction to my plight: Eww!

In the end I just had to have it cleaned, bandaged up, and a get a tetnus shot.

Oh there were no more rats in my science class after that.

And I have a cool scar!

Awww... I know. I didn't blame the rat - and they were taken home by a family to be pets - so it probably worked out better for them in the end.

Also, I would much rather deal with ROUSes than flame spurts or lightning sand.
