Today I went holiday shopping. Going on holiday costs a fortune doesn't it? You pay for your flight, you might need to pay for a passport, or travel insurance. You buy a new suitcase because the ones that were perfectly adequate last year somehow just don't cut it any more. You buy new clothes that you will never wear. You buy lotions and potions for every eventuality; You get suncream, in the event that you're stupid enough not to utilise your new purchase you buy aftersun, you buy insect repellant, treatments for insect bites, plasters to cover your insect bites, baby wipes, makeup wipes, antiseptic creams, oils and sprays. You buy notepads, just in case, books in case your holiday for some reason just isn't interesting enough to hold your attention.

It's kind of strange that you use your holiday to escape your normal life, and then use a paperback to escape your life on holiday.

But all of this expense, is before you even set foot in this strange new land, this amazing country that you've spent time and effort and money on reaching and enjoying and exploring. Then you spend on food, you spend on gifts, you spend on more clothes that you will never wear and you spend an awful lot of time trying to figure out how you could get even more italics into your blog post later.

I think I'm just feeling the pinch, especially because I have to order my euros in a minute D:
I've got some really nice things though, a check shirt that I've been after for ages for my flight, a cute white/red dress for the beach and a sailor-style skirt for... when I want to look like a sailor. I've spent a load of money on books for my dissertation, too. One on Gil Elvgren and one about the history of photographic erotica which is... more than dodgy. They're nice books though and they'll give me a tad more credibility that sources like... Wikipedia.

I actually think that whole... should we/shouldn't we use Wikipedia as a source in academic essays is a little redundant. My tutors maintain that Wikipedia is not a source because simply anyone can edit it, anyone can publish on Wikipedia without proof, or thought, or purpose... but the same can be said of all of the internet, just because it has an independent domain name doesn't make it any more valid, or correct. Just because something is published even in a newspaper, it doesn't make it fact; more often than not, it makes it a complete lie. The same bullshit can be found in books.

everybody lies.

The rest of the day I've spent... cooking, and watching Tim Minchin on the DVD that arrived today ^-^

Oh and my food diary is now spoilered, for your convenience.

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

My food diary!:
yesterday

  • Oat cereal with soy milk
  • cooked dinner with two quorn fillets, peas, homemade spicy potato wedges, salad
  • small slice of cake with elderflower butter icing (hell yes)
  • cheese and pineapple toastie
  • ...more... cake

today

  • the last of the oat cereal with soy milk
  • a peach smoothie that was about 0.000005% peach and alltheother% ice
  • two salad pitta with about a spoonful of mayonnaise (other people ate it all, bastards)
  • pasta with homeade tomato and garlic sauce
  • three pieces of sliced baguette with butter
  • an orange kit kat

I can't help thinking that a potential health kick is going to be rendered more than redundant by my upcoming holiday (saturday) and the lack of good vegetarian food overseas leading to me eating nothing but croissant, pain au chocolat... and cheese.

xxx x
