Basically, Rob (the guy referenced in the letter) is a friend of mine, so we made it look like he was sponsoring a grant in order to have me (a "work-study") research liquid nitrogen ice cream as a ..."business plan", or some such. We never actually outright lied, and it was our own money, and quite a process to just give UT money so we could get liquid nitrogen, and...sadly...this was the easiest way!
