Not normally my style of music but I took a chance and picked up the Defamation of Strickland Banks by Plan B a few days ago and I haven't stopped listening to it since. Lyrically it's one of the best albums I've heard in a long time and musically a great combination of blues & soul.
A concept album based around a fictional soul singer Strickland Banks who gets sent down wrongly for rape accused by a stalker when he rejects her the rest of the album is made up of how he handles life inside, ranging from becoming a recluse in his cell refusing to leave or wash to trading in his cigarettes for a homemade knife to protect himself. Then he ends up killing a guy who attacks him in the night and suffers guilt over it all. Gritty is an understatement but the music keeps you going throughout. An amazing album. Bought it for myself as a Christmas treat and I've hardly touched the albums others have bought me (which includes Trent Reznor...that's just how good this album is).
