a really big deal, walks with dad.
This is officially the best email i have ever written to my father:

Mom and Dad [but this more concerns dad]
I know you two are in England, and I hope you're having a really good time. But I wanted to write to you, and you will get this when you get home, but I felt the need to tell you.
Yesterday was one of the first pleasant weather days in Fairfax for a quite a while. It's been cold and wet, yesterday was very sunny and pleasant. So, being that I needed toothpaste, looroll, and bagels, and I didn't want to call anyone, I decided to take a walk. To the grocery store in university mall. It's not very far away. It takes me about 15 minutes to walk there. But I did, I walked there, and did my shopping, and walked back with my shopping. Taking a scenic route. All in all I was walking for about an hour. And I have to say, this was one of the few walks i've ever taken off my own volition. And I found it rather pleasent. I think, if the weather keeps up, I may go on another walk later.
However, I woke up this morning and i could actually "feel" the walk. Not an altogether bad feeling either. I just thought I would inform, o' Father, of my walking. Because I know how pleased you'll be. It was surprizingly relaxing.
Also, I bought "The Commitments" on dvd, because I found it for $7 in the grocery store, which is an excellent price.
Anyway, I hope you are having a great time.
Love you lots.
Colva.

This may seem like a silly, trivial thing to write to one's dad about, but mine will be so overwhelmed with joy. My dad has been making me walk all my life, since like toddlerhood. I hated it. I used to fall on the gravel, because I was 2, and not a good walker. Then we used to go on holiday, and he wanted to walk. I have "footslogged" the great cities of the world. New York, Chicago, New Orleans, Washington DC, Memphis, Nashville, Amsterdam [twice] London [repeatadly], Vienna, Budapest, Istanbul, Cape Town, Nice, Quebec, Lisbon, Dusseldorf, Stuttgart. i have walked like crazy. and then i went to europe with nicole, and did she ever want to walk. And when we're at home, my dad walks around lusaka for like 4 hours on a sunday afternoon, rain or shine, puts on his silly hat, his "walking shoes" and goes. it's crazy. my grandfather used to do it, all over Bwulwayo, hands behind his back, silly hat, walking, my grandma does it in cape town, probably as we speak. they say it helps them think, whatver. I hated it, with a passion all my life. I would huff and puff and complain and nagg and fight with my dad about it. All the biggest and worst fights i have had with my dad have been about walking. so my choice to walk, and enjoy a walk is a big deal.
he will be so proud.

Awww, it's nice when you have something in common with your dad. I suppose it's a bit like the first time my dad caught me with his Led Zeppelin albums.
