Why is it impossible to let things go sometimes? I was at work yesterday, and found this knob/lever thing on my office chair. After you find a knob, button, dial or anything like that, human nature insists that you find out what it does. You can't let a knob be a knob, that knob has to be there for a reason. Every button does *something*, has a purpose, and you just *have* to know what that something is (of course, that purpose could very well be to keep idiots like you and me occupied...). I have to admit I needed a break from the boring work I was doing, but I think it would have been the same if I wasn't bored out of my mind.
Seeing it was located on the part that connects the back of the chair to the seat, it would suggest that it did something with the seatback. It could move either left or right, but it didn't seem to do anything. I tried moving the seatback with the knob/lever thing all the way to the left, all the way to the right, centered. Tried moving the seatback backwards, forwards, up, down, sideways, but it wouldn't budge. This is the point where you get really frustrated, and determined to find out what it does. You try pushing the lever even further, or use more force. Move it back and forth more rapidly or violently. Untill you're holding it in your hand, not attached to your chair anymore. Now you're frustrated. Not only didn't you find out what it does, but even if it *did* do something, it's certainly not doing anything anymore now wink. You convince yourself to let it go. I mean, there's no way to find out what it does when it's broken, right? Besides, your chair didn't fall apart when the thing broke off. So it couldn't be that important anyway, right?
So you get back to work, might even forget about it for an hour or so, maybe even two. But it's impossible to let it go. Then you notice your coworker has the same chair as you do...
I found out what that knob/lever does. On my coworker's chair, it only moved to the right, but much easier than on my chair. With the most gentle of touches, it moved the back of the chair up and down. Kind of anti-climactic when you think about it. After an hour of frustration and determination, you realise that that knob was just broken, and it's function wasn't at all secret or obscure.
Yes, fridays at work are really dull wink. I'm generally the only one in my department that day, because everyone else either has the day off, or goes to class on friday.

Anyway, moving on wink. It's the weekend biggrin. That means I only have one week left at work before going on vacation! I really can't wait smile.
Other than some small last minute stuff like getting gifts, renew my prescription before I leave and buy some Dutch candy and stuff to bring with me, I'm pretty much set to go. I already made a list of all the things I need to pack, and made sure I have everything I need to bring with me. Passport is all checked out, I bought a new memorycard for my camera so I can take plenty of pictures, bought some spare batteries so I won't run out. I also looked up all the cables I need to bring (camera, phone, laptop etc), and the converter I need to bring with me so that I can actually plug said cables into those silly American wall sockets wink. I'd say I'm well-prepared smile
Only 10 days left! biggrin
